My Veggies

My husband built these raised beds (good job!) I buy cheap umbrellas from a discount store to use as shade for my lettuce and other tenders. They work well because I can put them up and down as needed. Squash and Zucchini are behind vines at far end. Fence trellis and potted willows are an experiment to hide view of horrible neighbors and their big trampoline, dog poop, dead grass, weeds and a zillion screaming kids. The remainder of our backyard is in shade.
Herbs do well along south exposure and brick wall (very hot!) That's where I was able to overwinter Rosemary. Morning glories will one day (I'm waiting...) climb on trellis.

With everyone showing such beautiful photos of their veggie bounty, I thought I'd better get on the bandwagon. Not that I have much of a bounty yet. But we are enjoying a nice variety of greens on a salad every evening. Other veggies that we have:

Peppers (my husband loves these). Tomato plants - 2: Actually have a couple of blossoms. Who knows, may have a tomato by labor day! Cucumbers, Zucchini, Yellow Squash, Spinach - not doing well. Also Cilantro, Parsley, Basil, Onions, Oregano, Rosemary, different Thymes (especially lemon!) Culinary sage and Dill.

Guess that covers most of it. My husband built these beautiful raised beds. I think he did a great job and I sure do enjoy them.

Darn it, Bev!

I was so proud of my raised beds, and now I see how it REALLY should be done. ;-)
Those beds look absolutely stunning. Kudos to your husband.
I really like the idea of the cheap parasols, might have to steal that idea from you too.
Thank you so much, by the way, for answering all my questions.

Thank you all for your kind comments. I really need to give all the credit to my husband for designing and building these beds. He made a bit of a ledge so you can sit down if you want. Like I have time for that! The umbrellas really work great. They are the sand umbrellas that you can stick in the dirt. Since they are pretty cheap they usually only last one season. And I can take them in and out if necessary.

Okay, Bev, you are clever! Using those umbrellas is a great idea, and your husband is very talented to make those amazing raised beds. You have a great vegetable garden.

Isn't it a challenge to "screen" the neighbors? There's a perfectly charming young family next door but I don't want to be greeted by the 2-year-old each day wanting to come over the fence and play in my yard. I use hanging baskets to screen me from them. Makes me feel invisible!

What an excellent job your hubby did with those raised beds!!! And what a great idea to use umbrella's in the garden to provide some much needed shade. Now why didn't I think of that? ;-)

Your veggie garden looks very inviting and pretty! Love that trellis. I think you need a sound proof wall to be really safe from screaming kiddies. ;-)

That umbrella idea may be the best I have ever seen on a blog!! In Florida, the summer sun scorches even the heat loving veggies. I've virtually given up on veggies because of it. This is such a "why didn't I think that?" idea.
