I Asked For It.....Brrr!

This morning it was 49 as a cold front came through last night. Not much precip but the plants are very happy to be out of the hot sun for once, and SO am I! It feels good to have some nice cool air coming in the windows and gives me an excuse not to garden, since I have many other things I need to accomplish. Tonight it is supposed to be near 40. In 1941 it actually got down to 28 this week! Anyway, here's some:

And...happy entry plants, especially morning glories that are tired of wilting in the sun.

In a couple of days it will warm up again and then maybe we'll have the start of our Indian Summer. It's great to have a break like this.

My Favorite Local Nurseries

This is Hillside Gardens, and as the name implies,

is on a hillside at the site of an old landfill. They hold many events and weddings here, and it is so peaceful to meander around.

We've had damaging winds for three days in a row. Last night the temp got down to 37. The lowest since 1906. I covered up some veggies but all the flowers did fine. Terrible wind chill today. I had to wear a jacket and fleece vest, and the wind stung my eyes. I'm telling myself it's a good thing...

that we haven't had to water the lawn yet this year.
that the city now has more than enough water and is able to sell some to the farm canals.
It's a good thing to be able to work outside without breaking a sweat.
that everything is so lush and green.
that we have not had a damaging hail storm right where I live (knock on wood).
that we don't experience tornados, hurricanes, and floods like other parts of the country.
that we are not troubled by too many bugs and pests.

So, to celebrate all these good things, and because I'm going crazy from the wind and caregiver stress, I decided to treat myself to a leisurely stroll through a couple of my favorite nursiers (and yes... I did pick up a few things along the way).

Here We Go Again!

The temperature yesterday afternoon was 49 with a freezing wind. I covered veggies, a few containers, and some new plants. The low last night was 35. Dangerously close, if you ask me! There were damaging winds, downpours, tornado warnings, golf ball-size hail in some parts of the State (thank goodness not here!) and more snow on Pikes Peak. Forecast calls for thunderstorms and rain every afternoon as far as we can see on the weather map. If it's like this now, what will it be like when the monsoons come (July-August)? Yikes!

It's a "Blue" Day...

I've got the blues today. The weather has been mostly lousy all week with 59 high yesterday. Skies are dark and gray most of the day. Unusual for this time of year, although you never know about May. Unpacked my summer clothes today but it's too cold to wear them. You see, we are spoiled in Colorado, as we are used to mostly sunny days. When it does set in like this it stays for a while. I am remembering how May often is.... hot...hot...hot... with winds that desiccate everything you plant. And I'm trying without much success to think how fortunate I am. The good news is that the City announced that because of heavier-than-usual snowpack and high reservoir levels we will not have watering restrictions this year.

Actually, this is great weather to transplant some perennials. The problem is that I've been playing catch-up for two weeks because of family and caregiving demands. Not much I can do about that so I end up feeling frustrated that I don't have the energy to get everything done (which is most likey the whole problem in a nutshell.) A trip to a garden center would have helped but no time for that either. Instead, I did take a walk around my gardens and took some photos. Great light for that.

Tomorrow's another day and I'm planning on a much brighter outlook. In the meantime, here are some "blue" photos to match my mood! And you can bet that when hot weather suddenly arrives one day soon I'll be complaining just as much...from the heat!
